My new game in-development

by Omar Wed Dec 23, 2015 6:23 am

Previously i was working on a horror game that i thought i was doing a good job at. However it crashed and i lost that file and forgot to backup the recent file. The file i had as a back-up was kind of old and i would have to put back the same amount of time i gave to that project. I wanted to work on it again, but the project wasn't becoming fun but monotone, while it had a lot of great story and gameplay ideas at first. I didn't find the fun factor in it anymore. Thus i left the project and didn't really want to rework on it anymore.

Then i began taking tutorials on how to model stuff online. With the current job i had, i couldn't buy myself a good 3D software like 3DS Max or Maya. So i went with the freeware Blender. Boy was it hell at first...All the explanations on these videos were overwhelming. But the videos i saw taught me and i learned from those videos ever since.

I met with a good programmer online and we are very passionate about video games. He and i decided to talk about how a game would be and we both decided to make a game with our talents.

It's been quite a while now. I have been learning and testing my models. Designing the levels and mechanics, modeling mostly everything.
My partner designed some characters and added environmental effects. Added cool animations.

Here's some screenshots while we were working on the game a while back.
This is early results of the game.

The game is still in-development. It's 3D and it's time consuming. Yes i wish it was a bit more simple but it'll do for now. The concept is pretty simple though, only that we added some of our twists. The game is running on Unity 5 and it's a very easy but powerful engine. New things are learned with this project. I learned how to properly texture objects and learned to give them bump maps and other materials. I'm working on the GUI and Main Menu at the moment while my partner is working on combat and other code. We got some new members on board that will take care of graphic design and story concepts. We are looking for a UI artist for the HUD.
I'd like to say that the game is actually inspired by Klonoa and Armed with Wings. One last thing before i go. I recently found a job where the pay is insanely high...But it's a full-time job. I might not work on the game like i used too. But the good thing is that i will be funding the game a bit better this time around.

Thank you for reading!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but where did you find your programming partner? I'm part of another group that is looking for one to finally complete a game that no previous coder we've had remained completely committed to development.

Game Engine? To be honest i don't know if he'll be able to code it because he's pretty busy with life work and with this project.
I'll ask him if he wants to code it.

That's alright. I wouldn't to bog him down with another commitment. I just wanted to know where you found him is all :).

Good place to find programmers is on the itch.io community forum - lots of young devs eager to make things.

Good job on picking up 3D modeling! I learned 3DS Max during my studies, and using it was some of the most fun I've had creating on a PC. Blender is an AMAZING tool. Keep using it, it's so flexible and versatile - and surprisingly free!

Good luck with Unity as well - it's a great engine with lots of support and documentation.

Would like to know more about the game, what kind of style / genre, character driven, mechanics ect.

Certainly keep us posted :D

I still have to model assets and trying to find the suitable style though.

Gameplay is important right now. Trying to get something like this.
https://youtu.be/d6RXvCUNX-4?t=1m7s (Cringe Worthy BTW)

We're planning on adding our own twist though. Giving the game puzzles and fun little secrets. Although i'm a Narrative maniac, i decided to not go too deep with the story as i feel it's not as important for a game like this. Recently we didn't want it to make a basic combat system but a very dynamic but simple where the player can choose his/her Style. For weeks i've been trying to find the most logical combat system. I had a lot of good ideas at first but later scrapped for being too complex to code or was too un-satisfying. I later remembered about Armed With Wing's Simple yet powerful combat system. I re-played Armed with Wings 2 and 3. Then some Culmination. I like that the combat systems are great and hasn't aged at all.

I told my partner about it but he says that the problem is that it's pretty spammy. Have to agree with him. We're still pretty un-decisive on what to program for a good combat system. It's hard because we do have to balance out 3 basic classes which is Melee, Ranged and Magic. (Sword, Bow and Staff)

Unity 5 is a great engine, we've been considering to go to Unreal Engine 4 due to being free but our only limitation is that we don't really know how to code very well on Unreal Engine 4. Re-learning everything is time consuming. We don't have much time to learn Unreal right now so we're comfortable with Unity.

Each day we learn something new. We learn about new programming tricks or visual effects on Unity. I'm still learning from Blender. Learning new things everyday. I may not be the best 3D modeler but i consider myself above average. Practice makes perfect, i guess!

I like to do some warm ups sometimes

I really want to talk about more things, but i need to keep some a secret. This game is going to be great and with my small experience i have i think i can make a fun and enjoyable game.
